Topic Folk Club- Rodney Branigan and Tim Snider review 26 May 2011

A warm friendly atmosphere and people intent on an evening of music and fellowship, the Topic Club  packed a wide variety of artistes into Thursday evening. 

A warm friendly atmosphere percolated  throughout the audience from start to finish. This informal setting saw wonderful performances from Rodney Branigan and Tim Snider. Guitar player with a difference and the ability to impress Rodney kept the audience spellbound. Why play one guitar when you can play two, at the same time and keep a good rhythm going. 

His effortless command of the guitar and powerful voice make Rodney’s live performances so inspirational. Rodney from Amarilo in America wooed the audience with powerful rhythms and harmonies and took them through a journey of foot tapping songs.   

A perfect accompaniment to Rodney's playing like salt and pepper was Tim Snider from Nevada playing the electric viola,  his expressive fiddle playing  had the audience moving and tapping their feet. Tim played his own song Free Falling people dancing and swaying to the tune which was greatly appreciated by the audience. Tim and Rodney  are versatile performers and love to share their music. Their performance was met with a rapturous applause and two extra songs.

The Topic club welcomes  people intent on an evening of music and fellowship and saw performances from floor singers. Jim Timeny sang The path I took and  he was accompanied by the audience singing the chorus in hushed voices. Tim told us that he had penned the song that afternoon . The events of the evening were compeered by David Kidman who also sang some traditional shanties.

Love Love Love at Hull Truck Theatre- Review

Satirical, polemical and funny, Love Love Love a new play by playwright Mike Bartlett arrived on Hull Truck Stage deftly directed by James Grieve and received a warm enthusiastic response from Tuesdays audience.
The play opens in the front room of  Henry played by Simon Darwen as a hard working traditional young working class man who has allowed his brother Kenneth to stay. Kenneth is a student at Oxford University played by Ben Addis as hedonistic and adventurous. Enter Sandra, played by Lisa Jackson, confident, sexy, audacious and libertarian to her soul. It is instant, self-indulgent, selfish attraction on sight.
The play follows Kenneth and Sandra's relationship in snapshots of pinnacle moments through three distinct periods of their lives, meet their teenage children Rose, played tempestuous and misunderstood by Rosie Wyatt, as the teenage daughter and Jamie played by James Barrett as the taunting, clever younger brother. Experience the dysfunctional effect of Kenneth and Sandra's love on their children as Rosie struggles to reach her dreams and Jamie is driven into compulsive neurosis. This experience is shared through witty and funny dialogue and the play races to its final climax as it explores many of the issues of modern day society and the responsibilities people have towards each other.
Lucy Osborne's simple stage design, three sets of living rooms each reflecting a different era work well in creating the ambience of the periods along with the lighting effects by Hartley T.A. Kemp and the music and sounds by Tom Gibbons.
I enjoyed this play, with its funny, and very human insights into modern family relationships. It was perhaps at times a little too strident in its message speaking directly to the audience instead of sharing insights in to human dilemmas through the actions of the characters- I recognised some of those dilemmas though and this is definitely a play I would recommend going to see.
The play is presented by the touring company Paine's Plough who specialise exclusively in commissioning and producing new plays and helping playwrights develop their craft. Hull Truck theatre have again fulfilled their promise of making new plays and drama accessible to Yorkshire Audiences.

FILM CLUB FIRST FOR BEVERLEY FESTIVAL

For the first time in its 28-year history, there’s to be a Film Club at the Beverley Festival next month.

        

Launched in partnership with Beverley Film Society, the Club will feature 4 specially-selected films with a strong folk music theme.

The initiative will be launched  on the morning of Saturday 18 June in the Club Room at Beverley Leisure Complex with Travelling for a Living, a 1965 BBC documentary featuring the early days of the Watersons as they toured the country in an old van from their home in Hull.

Later the same day there is a chance to see how the Watersons have evolved over the years  with a special showing of The Waterson Family  -  Live at Hull Truck, recorded last August and due to be released on DVD on June 13.

This unique home coming concert was their first in Hull for 25 years and has been described by Radio 2’s Mike Harding as “the folk event of the decade”. It brought together the original Watersons, Norma and Mike, plus Norma’s husband, Martin Carthy and their daughter Eliza, Mike’s wife Ann, their daughters Rachel and Eleanor, and the son and daughter of the late Lal Waterson, Oliver Knight and Marry Waterson.

Together the extended family perform  no less than 21 songs from their rich and varied repertoire, including “White Cockade”, "Bright Phoebus", "Fine Horseman", "Some Old Salty", "Shallow Brown", "Three Day Millionaire". The film also includes exclusive interviews with the members of the family at their home in Robin Hoods Bay; creating a fascinating career retrospective of the life and times of England’s first family of folk. The Watersons’ film will be preceded by a live set from Martin Carthy.

At noon on Sunday June 19 there will be a screening of the mock documentary about the US folk scene, A Mighty Wind, made by the same team who made the hugely-popular “rockumentary” Spinal Tap. This will be followed, later in the day, by the much-acclaimed Morris, A Life with Bells On - a heart-warming comedy, following the fortunes of an avant-garde Morris team in their struggle to evolve Morris Dancing.

Richard Watson (360 Club event manager) describes what 360 Club is about: '360 Club showcases the finest live music in Yorkshire, playing host to different acts each week showcasing a variety of genres and styles including, indie, rock, funk, electro-pop, electronic, folk and Jazz...if it's good I put it on!!'

Friday 20th May will bring the penultimate BAND NIGHT night before our summer break, and it's going to be a real hot-pot of music - from rock hard metal to fun-loving, up beat covers from the likes of the Beatles and lily Allen!!
First off, prepare yourselves for the hard rock/metal sound of IDLE CREEP. The variety of ages and influences within this new band to the Crown of Lights stage makes for a very entertaining and unique sh...ow.
Next we have the relatively new alt rock band SMALL PRINT. They are busy gigging around West Yorkshire and put on a great show with a mixture of original and cover material. Should be fun!
Last up will be the very experienced MAINSTREAM 53 who will also bring us a mixture of original and cover material, this time from more mainstream artists. This will be a rocking finish to the night.
As usual, we will have our acoustic artist playing between bands, and this time sees the very popular return of Creme Brulee frontman, JOHN MILLER doing acoustic covers from the like of Greenday, Oasis and maybe even Lady Gaga! Not to be missed.
As always, entry is FREE and the beer CHEAP. so come on down and have a right good night with us. You know it makes sense!

“Scenes in the City” led by bassist Arnie Somogyi, combine the talents of some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians in an all-star line-up, playing music of the great composer and bassist, Charles Mingus. Expect to hear familiar jazz favourites such as ‘Boogie Stop Shuffle’, ‘Fables of Faubus’ and ‘Better Get Hit in Your Soul’ played with the freedom and drive that define one of the most important and colourful figures in Jazz.

This Friday sees three more acts BRAND NEW to our Acoustic Nights. DAVID TATTERSALL and AELFEN both from Wakefield and DANIEL LUCAS aka BOSS CAINE from York. Also from York the welcome return of female duo TWO promoting their second album. One of this region's finest fiddle players also makes a welcome return (Sarah Horn) in the rousing duo that is SARAH & JAMES. 
We're incredibly fortunate to have right on our doorstep one of the best singer/songwriters that is JASMINE KENNEDY. She has been a bit elusive of late due to a busy gigging schedule but we're assured an early appearance this Friday at 8:10pm after a four month absence!
Add to that the hauntingly beautiful vocals of our regular show opener FINOLA and bringing us all back down to earth with his excellent wit, patter and wonderful blues guitar is our ever fateful 'man in the hat' CHRIS MARTIN.
