Beverley Festival teams up with Hull’s  for a great festival warm-up concert

The Beverley Festival (Folk, Acoustic, Roots) will be presenting its first pre-festival warm-up concert of the year at its partner venue, Fruit in Hull’s Old Town, on Thursday 7^th April, featuring some of the best local talent around today.

As well as one of Hull’s favourite bands, Circus Envy, it will be bringing two of the region’s best young bands to Hull; Blackbeard’s Tea Party from York and Sea Fret from Bridlington.

Circus Envy, an alternative-folk band feature a line-up of primarily acoustic instruments, which adds a traditional sensibility to their intricately crafted harmony-led modern songs with use of bouzouki, mandolin and cajon.  Last year the band released an EP - "A New Dawn" which reached the HMV Folk CD Top 40 and received critical praise and reviews. The track "Three Score and Ten" received significant BBC airplay, including on BBC Radio 2.

Back to Hull again, after having performed at the Half Past the Weekend concerts last Summer, are Blackbeard’s Tea Party.   

A young and lively six-piece band from York, they play traditional and contemporary dance tunes and new arrangements of folk songs and sea shanties, with heavy electric guitar riffs, fiddles, melodeons and an eclectic feast of international hand percussion, with occasional brassy outbursts and some surreal synth bass – all combined to create a sound that is big, tasty, dramatic, danceable and totally unique.

The youngest musicians performing will be Sea Fret, an acoustic duo from Bridlington who write and record their own music as well as doing covers from artists such as Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Paolo Nutini, Bob Dylan, Eva Cassidy and many more.  

Their youngest member is 15, but already the duo have been recorded by Radio Humberside as well as having performed all around the region. Certainly a duo to watch.

The concert, is being supported by the English Folk Dance and Song Society as a part of their “Folk Rising” programme, which supports young performers throughout England.

This is funded by the Arts Council England.

This Friday sees the keenly awaited return of GARRON FRITH from Salford to the Crown of Lights stage in Heckmondwike. After delivering a stunning performance in March last year the organisers have patiently waited for his return. Donal O'Driscoll said, "The quality of this man's voice together with his songwriting was breath-taking. Of the many albums I listen to his has been one of the most played. I'm really looking forward to hearing his new stuff on the night."
Joining him for the first time at these Acoustic Nights will be close friend JASON JOHNSTON from Stalybridge and ROGER DAVIS from Brighouse. The Acoustic Nights are also delighted to welcome back the fast rising star that is JASMINE KENNEDY as well as FINOLA and CHRIS MARTIN. The show also includes another rising star JADE HELLIWELL. Jade stunned the audiences at the St Pats Special and her return is also eagerly awaited.
To fit everything in we're going to have to start at about 7:45pm!
A quick mention about our first ever Tribute Night on Thursday 21st April (the day before Good Friday). The fantastic STONED ROSES will be supported by the brilliant BRITROCKS! Tickets are just £5 and available for sale at the bar of The Comrades and also at The Swan in Liversdege.

In Seven Days Barnsley Will Show Its Acoustic Roots The 2011 Barnsley Acoustic Roots Festival (BARF) starts in seven days time with performances by pupils from Kingstone School on Thursday 31 March. This is followed by the headline performance at The Civic by Show of Hands on Friday, and two days of incredible music from the UK and America on Saturday and Sunday Tickets for the Show of Hands concert are selling quickly, so to avoid disappointment we would recommend that you book your tickets before the evening. The larger capacity at Kingstone School for events over the weekend, will mean that tickets will be available on the door. Black Diamonds Students from Kingstone School have been exploring traditional music, dance and story telling for over a month assisted by Maria Roberts and Ray Hearne. The students are currently putting the finishing touches to their show – Black Diamonds. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe, The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, March 22- Review

 Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? by playwright Edward Albee arrives at the Crucible Theatre, deftly guided by Director Erica Whyman and at Tuesdays show the cast played out a bitterly hilarious, human and bitingly observant performance that had the audience laughing and gasping with warm applause and cheers.

The play opens in the lounge of George and Martha late at night and finds the couple home after a party. George to his dismay finds that a young couple have been invited as guests and prepares himself with a drink, waiting for the  familiar party games ahead that he and his wife play.

The open lounge stage design by Soutra Gilmour and subtle changes in lighting by Charles Balfour added to the flavour of the drama enhancing  the players expression of the evenings marital horrors  to the full.
Martha played with a delightfully sluttish indifference by Sian Thomas, making lascivious avaricious eyes at young new teacher Nick, played serious, intense and pressurised by John Hopkins. Simultaneously Martha slyly stabs her claws into Nick’s simple unsuspecting wife Honey played innocent naive and giggly by Lorna Beckett.  Martha's main aim is hurling acid tipped needle comments at her inadequate husband George. George old early, grey bypassed history scholar played sour by Jasper Britton responds with florid oratory that rises to the bait of wife Martha's acid banter.

Together this acerbic pair play out their games and brutalise the unsuspecting young couple they've invited over. Sian and Jasper's powerful stage presence and fullness of personality as Martha and George drew the Crucible audience in to compelling changing human emotions as the pair struggled in battle for supremacy.
You sense George is weary with the games as he shuffles stooped and shrunken around the lounge but his weakness is a sham as he exorcises an icy revenge on Martha in the plays climax.
Behind the veil of contempt there remains real affection between Martha and George and both Sian Thomas and Jasper Britton within their acidly witty exchanges and beautifully insinuated human gestures, which peel away the social niceties and into the raw realities of their existence yet nevertheless allow us glimpses of their underlying, love and loyalty. The stories drama is  guided by Erica Whyman’s assured sensitive direction allowing the blending between comedy and drama, and makes us appreciate every minute of a wittily funny, mostly cruel, occasionally tender night which at the plays end earned the cast a warm enthusiastic applause and loud cheers.

Just the way Theatre should be- go see this play, you won’t be disappointed.

This play was first performed in 1945 (in Russia) and in 1946 (in the UK). It is considered to be one of Priestley's best known works for the stage and one of the classics of mid-20th century English theatre. The play's success and reputation have been boosted in recent years by a successful revival by director Stephen Daldry for the National Theatre in 1992
Priestley's classic play of the believable middle-class Yorkshire family, called to account for its moral crimes by the enigmatic Inspector Goole, stands as a metaphor for our own failure to accept our responsibility to others.

Long considered part of the repertory of classic "drawing room" theatre, the play has also been described as a scathing critique of the hypocrisies of Victorian/Edwardian English society and as an expression of Priestley's socialist political principles.

In Jasper National Park, the wolves, Kate and Humphrey, have known each other since puppyhood, but they are on opposing ends of the Western Pack's social structure with Kate as the energetic Alpha daughter of the pack leader and Humphrey being the good humoured Omega. Kate is forced to accept an arranged marriage with Garth of the Eastern Pack to unite the packs for peace, regardless of Humphrey's hopeless attraction for her.

Before that union can occur, Kate and Humphrey are captured by the park's rangers and sent to an Idaho park as part of a wolf repopulation project. Mindful of her duties, Kate is determined to return to Jasper and Humphrey offers to help with the assistance of two odd geese. However, as this disparate pair struggle through many dangers to get home, a growing mutual appreciation of their talents and then a deeper love threatens to disastrously complicate everything if they make it back.

First Friday Frolics - Stand Up Comedy at The ACE

Join us at The ACE Centre on the first Friday of every month for an evening of stand up comedy in association with Concept Comedy Promotions.  Each evening features a full programme of outstanding comic talent with three great comedians and an MC for just £7 in advance (or £8 on the door).

 

Our host and compare for this evening of April Fools is The One Like Fish, a regular compere and stand up comedian on the North West circuit and beyond. A major fan of the Artist Formerly Known As Prince, he spent a fortune in 2008 when he read in the tabloids words 'Prince touring in Afghanistan', he was most disappointed when Harry wouldn't do Purple Rain or even give an autograph

Opening act for the night is the wonderful Dame Mandy Knight. As a stand up she has headlined all over the world as well as appearing on numerous television and radio programmes. Mandy is the current 'Time Out' Best Female Comic and was the very first female comic to compere for The Jongleurs Comedy chain. She has done TV work appearing in Jo Brand's "Like it or Lump it" series and with David Baddiel in his last series "The Baddiel Syndrome".

Handling the middle section we have Michael J Dolan. An arrogant, immature, heroically lazy and probably the smartest man alive. He is also paranoid, socially incapable and emotionally fragile and has achieved literally nothing in over a decade.

 
Headline act is the fabulous Greg Cook.  His deadpan delivery, style and mastery of the spoken word led John Plowman, head of BBC Comedy to describe him as 'Les Dawson for the 20th Century'. He abandoned a law degree after two years to write and perform stand up comedy full time. “Law and comedy are essentially the same gig”, says Greg, “telling lies for money. But this way I don’t have to wear a tie”.

Crown of Lights St Patricks Day Special- Review

A lovely night at the Crown of Lights in Heckmondwike, great music from four diverse bands.
Thingamejig a five piece from Dewsbury and Holmfirth, playing some traditional Irish jigs and songs with rhythmic drumming cat weasel, a lovely twangy pink acoustic bass guitar, twinkly mandolin and acoustic guitar and expressive fiddle setting the audiences toes a tapping, lovely voice harmonies in the songs.
Then came the inimical folk singer Bruce Baillie from Cleckheaton who sang in a clear Yorkshire voice rich and resonant with harmonics underpinning and subtle dynamics reflecting the mood of his songs accompanying himself on guitar with harmonica solos clear and rich in tone.
Followed by 6 piece  Leeds and York band Mahoganey Monkey, with flute, whistles, and mandolin etching sweet melodies against African drum, guitar and bass rhythms and harmonies, accompanied by vocal harmonies.
Jade Helliwell stole the show with her beautiful powerful vocal performance accompanied on keyboard, drums and Bass guitar by the versatile Peter Earnshaw and Dalton Wright. Her love of song and expression overcame any shyness or nerves and her own song 'Save Me' was deliciously upbeat and uplifting. Her performance drew loud and excited applause from the Crown of Light audience.
Excellent compeering from host Donal and attentive sound, stage and lighting from engineers Peter Earnshaw and Dalton Wright kept all the difficult acoustic instruments singing sweetly.
Good hand pulled beer and a friendly attentive audience shared a fun, musical St Patrick's night together.

"Mong Aid 2011" charity gig to raise funds for the purchase of an ambulance for the Mongol Rally team "Attila the Nun" to drive and donate to a hospital in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
