Summer Jazz@Seven Arts Leeds (and elsewhere!)

There used to be nothing much happening jazzwise in the summertime – but no more! Firstly there are Seven Jazz’s presentations at Seven Arts in Leeds….

This Sunday afternoon 30th June, 1-4pm: PHIL MEADOWS GROUP - ‘ENGINES OF CREATION’ UK TOUR
Phil Meadows sax/electronics, Laura Jurd trumpet, Elliot Galvin piano, Conor Chaplin bass, Simon Roth drums
We’re looking forward to seeing Phil back in Leeds again. Phil trained at LCM and since moving to London his career has blossomed. He’s now musical director at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, has performed at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, a member of the Future Beats horn section, a journalist for Jazz UK magazine and his compositions and arrangements are played by many others. Touring his debut album, saxophonist and composer Phil takes joy in capturing snapshots of situations that have triggered personal 'Engines of Creation'. From tales of cartoonish characters and trivial battles, to marking pivotal situations, arrivals and departures – Meadows' clever episodic writing balances an eclectic range of contemporary influences, strong improvisational language, and wit. Combining soaring melodies, a collection of grooves and elements of the avant-garde the group showcases players from an important new wave of rising British talent, featuring acclaimed trumpeter Laura Jurd, pianist Elliot Galvin, bassist Conor Chaplin and drummer Simon Roth. "His music is perfect, really accessible with a tight sound and great buzz” – Special FX, Royal Exchange Theatre. ”A highly professional, diligent, creative and enthusiastic musician. Certainly one to watch and definitely one to listen to." – Jason Yarde
